Lady Irwin Senior Secondary School -'Dhiyo yo nah Prachodayaat', Rig Veda (10:16:3)

Many of us at Lady Irwin School learnt Rabindra Sangeet in our junior classes. Some of us learnt the songs without really knowing the meaning of what we were singing. But it was enough to raise a sustained interest in music no matter what fields we chose later in life. Here is one that most students who studied at the Primary School in the 1960s and 70s will remember: The song is Amare Paray Paray. This is a version sung by the famous Hemanta Kumar.

The Lady Irwin School for Girls was established in 1927, under the leadership of the late Shri S. R. Das, the Law Member of the Viceroy's Executive Council, for the purpose of making education available under the same roof to all the children of Central Government servants. Since the Summer Capital those days was located at Simla, a branch of Lady Irwin School was first opened in Simla. A branch was later opened in New Delhi so that students did not suffer any inconvenience when the government servants moved to Delhi, which was the Winter Capital. The High School Building, still looks  the same as it did decades ago. The signage is gone though! The High School Building still looks the same as anyone in living memory can remember. The Middle School was housed in one of the Army Barracks (also constructed in the British times) on Canning Lane, located right across what was then known as 'Pataudi House'. The Middle school building has since been demolished. The school address always included the line: Canning Lane, Near Curzon Road! Canning Lane is now known as Madhav Rao Scindia Road. Ms. Bharati Banerjee, Faculty at the Lady Irwin School, New Delhi was a member of the Mountaineering Expedition Team of 1970 that successfully scaled the Hanuman Tibba Peak (5928 m - 19450 feet ) on October 5, 1970. The expedition was led by M.C. Usha. The other members were Sudha Talwar and Sherpa Lobsang. The expedition was successful even though it met with bad weather all along. Hanuman Tibba Peak, 19450 feet In 1974 Bharati Banerjee along with another climber Heather Larsen successfully climbed Bhunoti (18,000t), a peak in the Garhwal-Kumaun Himalaya Range.
