LADY IRWIN SCHOOL- THE SCHOOL BUILDINGS
The High School Building, still looks the same as it did decades ago. The signage is gone though! |
The 'new' Middle School is now housed in a building adjacent to the school Gymnasium, which was once the heartbeat of the school. For years the School raised funds for construction of the Middle School Building through what was known as the 'P.T.Show'. Year after year some amazing shows were organized by the students at the National Stadium at India Gate. One hour of training and practice, every day for a full year, by every student of every class went into preparing for the Annual P.T. Show. It was a grand affair by those years' standards. Says Ms. Kirti Jain who did her schooling at Lady Irwin (batch of '66), and who was the President of the National School of Drama said: “Our PT displays can be seen as pioneering choreography.
The scale of participation was so large that we used to perform in stadia." Finally, after decades of effort, there were just enough funds to construct a building which would house Class 6th, 7th and 8th.
A branch of Lady Irwin School was also opened in Simla which was then the summer capital of India. When the government officials moved to Simla during the summer months, no inconvenience or break in education was caused to the daughters of the government employees. The Lady Irwin School building at Shimla today is a heritage building that houses the Dalziel Hotel.

ReplyDeleteLady Irwin School was the first school for girls. It was established in 1927, under the leadership of late Mr. Satish Ranjan Das, a barrister and member of the Viceroy's Executive Council, for the purpose of making quality education available under the same roof to all the children of Central Government servants, irrespective of their status. In 1935 the school shifted to a building on Canning lane, now Madhav Rao Scindhia Marg, built by Sir Shobha Singh on the land given on lease by Mr. N.N. Sarkar and Mr. Amritalal Bandyopadhyay in 1931.

DeleteI don't see the cafe page. I just want to confirm, what happened to the Shimla building between 1935 to 1947? Was it still a school or already turned into a hotel? Just trying to dig up some family history. Thank you.
DeleteI used to live in Pataudi house. I remeber Lady Irwin college which was opposite the road to Pataudi house. Are the college and school different.
